Abstract

The ab initio electronic structure of model Co/Al 2O 3 heterojunctions with varying interface quality is investigated. It is evidenced that the metal-induced gap states determine the position of the Fermi level relative to the bottom of the conduction band which defines the effective barrier height for tunnel transport. This introduces a new origin for barrier height fluctuations related to the interfaces.
