Abstract

The possibility of using nitro compounds as photochemical oxidants of organic compounds of divalent sulfur has been explored using quantum chemistry methods. For nitromethane, probable mechanisms and products of oxidation of hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, and dimethyl sulfide have been revealed. It has been found that the oxidation can readily occur only for the systems in the excited triplet state and the reactions in the ground singlet state are unlikely to proceed via this mechanism.
