Abstract

Only two cases of Th. callipaeda spreading are known in Russia which were recorded in Moscow and St. Petersburg in 2017. The purpose of this research was to report on the ocular nematode in a dog in Tyumen. The studies were performed at the VetKom Veterinary Clinic located in Tyumen in December 2021. For diagnosis, anamnestic data were collected, and a clinical examination, Jones’ test and Schirmer test were performed, the ocular fundus was examined, and the conjunctival sac was irrigated with isotonic sodium chloride solution. The first case of thelaziosis was recorded in a 7-year-old Russian Spaniel in Tyumen. The dog was most likely infected during a trip to the Abkhaz Republic between August and October. Antibacterial drops and ointments did not give a positive effect during the treatment with signs of blepharospasm and hyperemia of the left eye conjunctiva retained. Irrigation of the conjunctival sac with isotonic sodium chloride solution detected six Thelazia callipaeda specimens. Therapy with Tobradex drops at a dose of 1 drop into the affected eye 4 times a day for 14 days, and treatment with Advokat drops on the shoulder twice with a 14-day-interval showed high efficacy; the clinical signs of thelaziosis were eliminated, and no Thelazia larvae were found.
