Abstract
The immense beast slumbered upon a wide stone ledge that knifed out from the hillside overlooking the vast expanse of the green Pacific. Ivoryplumed waves crashed almost soundlessly hundreds of feet below cliffs that only marginally accommodated a wagon trail that ran north to south, fifty feet below the ledge. With a massive head resting motionless upon two equally enormous paws, the creature remained so still that one could be forgiven for mistaking the shaggy, gray enormity for a huge boulder.
