Abstract

The subject of the Conference – The Universal Library – demands that those who are concerned with humanistic libraries must first ask themselves two questions: what did the humanists think such a library was and can we understand the consistency and limitations of the humanistic idea of a Universal Library today? The papal library of Nicholas V is examined as a good example of how an 'universaf' manuscript library was built up on humanistic principles.
