Abstract

The variable breakdown device is described, its mode of operation, and characteristics of present research models. It is shown to operate as an amplifier and switch. It has been found that the device has a pure inductive impedance, with the early models showing this over more than two decades of frequency. Its operation as a two terminal inductance is described and the theoretical analysis developed. Several new circuit functions become very simple with the inductive effect, including a simple oscillator, a frequency modulator, and a wave analyser, which are described.
