Abstract

The three US maritime services – the Navy, Marines Corps and Coast Guard – released a joint strategy in December 2020 describing their view of how to modernise their force structures and operational concepts, largely in response to the rise of China and the increasing use of long-range precision-strike capabilities. Among other things, the strategy calls for an emphasis on ‘day-to-day operations’ in situations short of crisis or war; for new types of expeditionary operations to deny adversaries access to the sea; and for investments in technologies such as advanced uninhabited platforms.
