Abstract
ABSTRACT Voter qualification proponents argue such policies cultivate a more qualified electorate by prohibiting those who lack political knowledge or have questionable moral character from casting a ballot. However, opponents argue these reforms reflect thinly veiled attempts to disenfranchise voters of color, suggesting racial animus undergirds support for restrictive voter qualifications. Adding to the literature on voter access and election laws, this study examines the extent to which racial animus influences support for knowledge tests and felon disenfranchisement among white Americans. Using a battery of questions tapping racial animus among a nationally representative sample of over 5,000 white Americans in 2022, results confirm racial animus influences support for voter qualifications.
