Abstract

The chapter underscores the early involvement of Joseph Gikubu in Kenyan youth education during his incarceration at Manyani Detention Camp. Despite the many challenges that he and other detainees experienced at Manyani and the colonial policies of handling youth vagrancy that were enacted during the Mau Mau War, the camp helped him to discover his gifts in youth education. Through his leadership and varied work with the detained youths, Gikubu gained several educational and administrative skills. His role as an effective and transformative youth leader contributed enormously to the youths’ early transfer to Wamumu to be provided more educational opportunities. To Gikubu, Manyani was the “University of Hard Knocks.” It was the “University of Life” that allowed him to discover his talents in educational leadership and youth education. Manyani Detention Camp created a path to his greater involvement and engagement in Kenyan youth education.
