Abstract

Mr President, Secretary-General, members of U nidroit It is a great honour to stand before you today on this memorable occasion, and a particular privilege to be able to represent the Vatican Museums, which have housed the Papal collections of artistic heritage for over five hundred years. We have works of art that cover a time span of over three thousand years—a collection that may well be defined as a ‘treasure chest’ of human creativity. A trove where one can admire all sorts of art … although most of it—predictably—is constituted by religious art. With the evolution of religions, be they mono or polytheistic, animist or totemist, art evolved into the direct representation of faith itself, so much so that it has become an expression not only of the sacred but also of the aesthetic tastes of a population, taking on an absolute historical value. In other words, artistic heritage, and religious artistic heritage, in particular, represents the soul of a people, the real history of a nation, the identity of a State.
