Abstract
The off-mass-shell extension is ambiguous in the usual formulation of field theory. The effective action in the usual formulation depends on the choice of parametrizations and gauge conditions for the quantized fields. It is shown in the present paper that these ambiguities arise in consequence of a naive definition of off-mass-shell quantities. The unique effective action is constructed in quantum theory. The final expressions are presented for the Yang-Mills and Einstein theories.
