Abstract

The World Trade Organisation (WTO), under new management since March 2021, faces several chronic and acute challenges that threaten its legitimacy in the eyes of its members. The body will attempt to advance ongoing trade negotiations and reform to its dispute-settlement mechanism before the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference scheduled for November 2021. But if it fails at these tasks, more countries may conclude that the WTO can be safely ignored and impose new protectionist measures that will put downward pressure on global trade.
