Internal control plays an important role in managing the risks of banking system activities. Controllers are always under pressure from control activities due to the bank’s diverse activities. The resignation of internal controllers is relatively common in commercial banks. It is also a matter of concern for the banking and finance industry, which coordinates economic resources for the country, especially when the internal control period occurs again with the pandemic. The study uses the convenience sampling method to collect data from 339 respondents who are working or worked as internal controllers in commercial banks. The study was surveyed in 2023. The study uses quantitative methods for exploratory factor analysis. Ordinary least squares process the data to test the hypotheses. Some factors affect the turnover intention of internal controllers, such as occupational awareness, employment conditions, office environment, and career opportunities, in the context of COVID-19. The result is a useful resource for researchers to comprehensively understand issues related to the turnover intention of internal controllers in the banking industry. The study supports managers of commercial banks in planning the strategic objectives of human resource stabilization for the stable growth of the banking system.

Research on the Quality of Internal Audit in Commercial Banks in Vietnam
  • May 29, 2025
  • International Journal of Advanced Multidisciplinary Research and Studies
  • Nguyen Hoang Son

Volatility in the financial market has increased the risks faced by commercial banks. These institutions require effective tools to assess the efficiency of their internal resources and projects. Implementing effective internal audit practices has become a strategic and urgent solution under current conditions. However, in reality, the internal audit function in commercial banks still faces confusion and a lack of both theoretical and practical experience. Improving the quality of financial statement audits in Vietnamese commercial banks is essential to ensuring transparency and accountability within the financial sector. High-quality financial statements allow investors, shareholders, and regulators to make well-informed decisions regarding the performance and stability of commercial banks, thereby contributing to the overall health of the economy. In Vietnam, the quality of financial audits is especially critical as the banking sector grapples with issues such as non-performing loans and weak corporate governance. These problems can erode public confidence in the financial system, reduce investment, slow economic growth, and even trigger financial crises. Moreover, with the growing complexity of financial transactions and the adoption of new technologies, auditors must continuously improve their skills and knowledge to ensure that financial statements are accurate and reliable. This is particularly important for commercial banks, which are subject to stringent regulatory and reporting requirements. By examining financial statements, detecting errors, providing recommendations on internal controls and financial reporting processes, and identifying potential risks, independent auditors ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial information. This enhances investor confidence, contributes to a more stable financial system, and helps maintain the integrity and transparency of financial markets. Therefore, enhancing the quality of financial audits in commercial banks carries both theoretical and practical significance.

  • ECONOMICS, FINANCE AND MANAGEMENT REVIEW

This balanced approach aims to harness the benefits of foreign ownership while safeguarding financial stability and the interests of the domestic economy. Therefore, it may make the banks more risky and perform the study on the relationship between foreign ownership and bank risk taking become more important. • Risk Governance and Control: Financial Markets and Institutions
  • Pham Thi Hong Nhung + 1 more

This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business efficiency of 15 listed commercial banks in Vietnam, from 2016–2023. We use qualitative analysis methods and T-test models in SPSS software to compare the efficiency of indicators before and after COVID-19. Research results have shown that the operating picture of the banking industry has a rare bright spot when the business efficiency of the entire banking industry has grown, in which state-owned commercial banks have a significant gap with the group of private commercial banks, thanks to better total asset size and risk buffer. The authors find that the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (VCB) is the state-owned bank with the most stable and best performance in the research sample and observation period, while the Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MBB) is the best private bank. In the post-COVID-19 period, from 2021–2023, the business performance of commercial banks in Vietnam has grown in return on equity (ROE), net interest income (NII), and profit after tax (PAT). At the same time, capital adequacy ratio (CAR) has no difference, showing that the financial safety level of commercial banks remains stable. Thereby, the authors propose four solutions to commercial banks and recommend four policy implications to the management agency.

Factors Affecting Loan Loss Provisions during the Covid-19 Pandemic – The Case of Commercial Banks in Vietnam
  • May 24, 2022
  • European Journal of Business and Management Research
  • Dung Thi Thuy Nguyen

Credit is considered a crucial activity of commercial banks; it accounts for the most significant proportion of the bank's total assets and is also an activity that carries great risks. The study uses OLS, FEM, REM, and FGLS to assess the factors affecting loan loss provisions (LLPs) of 20 Vietnamese commercial banks during the Covid-19 pandemic from Q1/2020 to Q4/2021. The result of the model is based on FGLS to overcome the phenomenon of heteroscedasticity after using estimation by OLS, FEM, REM, showing that the factors affecting LLP of Vietnamese commercial banks during the Covid pandemic include: bank size (SIZE), non-performing loans ratio (NPL), a ratio of pre-tax profit and provision to total assets (CROA), loans to total assets ratio (LOAN), and credit growth (ΔCREDIT). Research results using the FGLS method show that bank size, bad debt ratio, pre-tax profit ratio and provision to total assets and credit growth positively impact the LLP of the Vietnamese commercial banks in the Covid pandemic. However, interestingly, the percentage of loans to total assets can decrease the provision for loan losses. Thereby, the study proposes some policy implications as follows: The SBV needs to have the policy to limit credit growth and bad debt ratio for commercial banks to control the competition for a market share of loans without ensuring the quality of loans, leading to an increase in credit risk and LLP. Furthermore, each Vietnamese commercial bank needs to develop and apply a practical and comprehensive credit process to ensure debt recovery to avoid a lot of bad debts. For new customers, banks need to fully assess all aspects to predict the level of risk before deciding to provide loans. Additionally, the long-term effects of Covid-19 cause difficulties for commercial banks' activities, SBV needs to consider supportive policies through interest rate reduction, grace period, and debt extension to increase financial performance and maintain market share and profits of commercial banks.

This study adopt fixed assets, SG&A (selling, general and administrative expenses) and interest expenses as input factors, use the amounts of loans and revenues as output factors, and employ Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the efficiency performance and relative efficiency of commercial banks according to Farrell’s efficiency evaluation theory. We group all sample commercial banks into three categories, namely “Old Commercial Banks”, “New Commercial Banks” and “Commercial Banks Upgraded from Credit Cooperatives” and evaluate the efficiency of commercial banks, including overall efficiency, overall technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency, scale efficiency, and allocation efficiency. The empirical results find that the “Old Commercial Banks” possess highest efficiency value than the other two groups. Besides, the “Old Commercial Banks” also have the highest overall technical efficiency, pure technical efficiency and allocative efficiency. It implies that the “Old Commercial Banks” is doing well in competing with the new entrants, which makes them keep better efficiency than both the “New Commercial Banks” and the “Commercial Banks Upgraded from Credit Cooperatives”.
