Abstract
The stress analysis techniques necessary for developing a toroidal field coil support structure design for a commercial power reactor are described. Simple analytical techniques, beam element analysis and finite element modelling all have a part to play. The power of simple techniques in guiding a number of design choices is emphasized and its accuracy indicated by reference to a finite element analysis of the finally developed structure.
