Abstract

Enthalpies of formation of silver + palladium solid solutions were measured by liquid-tin solution calorimetry. The minimum enthalpy of formation was found to lie at mole fraction 0.40 of palladium. This was correlated with the magnetic character of the alloys; they are diamagnetic below mole fraction 0.40 of palladium and paramagnetic above. Pauling's theory of metallic chemical bonding provides a satisfactory explanation of this.
