Abstract

This chapter is a commentary on key dimensions of an important emerging cultural psychological theory identifying the salience of ‘symbolic universes’ in modern political and social life. The commentary is broken down into a minor and a major part. The minor part consists of a short recapitulation of the theory’s main dimensions. The account is selective, foregrounding key issues to be addressed in the major part. This major part consists of placing the theory in relation to another theory on which the author is actively engaged, the Cork tradition of cognitive sociology, finding differences between the approaches within the framework of modern epistemological-ontological thinking in the social sciences, but ultimately finding them complementary and with good cooperation potential.
