Abstract

We invited Karl E. Grosspietsch from the Fraunhofer Institute of Autonomous Intelligent Systems to organize a special issue on unorthodox computer architectures. This issue presents articles on somewhat unfamiliar topics includingartificial neural networks for ultra-large-scale integration,a parallel neural processor for real-time processing,an intelligent memory architecture for artificial neural networks,a symbolic-learning method based on multiple-valued logic using recon-figurable hardware, anda parallel-processor architecture based on the extension of the cache-only memory architecture to the instruction sequence.
