Abstract
1) The term milieu or the functional circle corresponds to Uexkiill's concept Umwelt. Abraham Moles suggested using the term environment as its equivalent, although he admits that this is not a fully adequate term. We suggest using the term milieu because environment has a positivist connotation and is very much related to behaviorist epistemology, whereas Umwelt was a phenomenological term.
