Abstract
ABSTRACT In this paper, we give an account of a large-scale local networked music performance project produced in 2019 for a series of events in Hamburg’s historic St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel. The project included performances of nineteen compositions by an ensemble of 144 musicians, synchronised utilising a browser-based system developed specifically for this occasion. We discuss the social, musical and technological contexts of the project, exploring the conceptual space between local—and wide-area networked music performance, and examine the nature of the communication network topologies in site-specific, spatial and telematic music performance contexts. Finally, we include accounts from selected composers on the ideas and circumstances surrounding the composition of these pieces, their rehearsal, and rendition in the St. Pauli Elbe Tunnel performances.
