Abstract

Determinations have been made of the structures of the salt-bearing aluminosilicates, Species P and Q, having unit-cell compositions Bals[AboSi660192]1.7Ba (OH)2, 12.5BaCh, 35H20 and Bals[AboSi660192]1.6Ba(OH)2, 11.9BaBr2, 30H20 respectively. The structure of the zeolite (Na,Bao.5)ao[AlaoSi660192]1.7(Na2,Ba)Ch, 72H20 obtained from Species P by extraction of BaCh with NaNOa . aq has also been determined. The structures confirmed that the alumosilicate frameworks of all three phases were based upon that of zeolite ZK-5. Much of the non-framework scattering material was also located in the three structures. Within characteristic 1S-hedral cavities the non-framework ions and molecules were almost identically arranged in Species P and Q and had a very similar configuration in the extracted Species P, so that this configuration appears to be determined largely by the form of the 18-hedron. The arrangement within 26-hedra also showed similarities between the three structures but here the greater volume permitted greater variations in configuration.
