Abstract

Small-scale deformation exhibited by Precambrian banded hematite jaspers of the Singhbhum iron district, India, is of two types--puckering, characterized by the production of drag folds, knots, and lenses in the hematite bands, which took place prior to consolidation of the sediments, and fracturing and shatter folding, which occurred after consolidation. The hematite jaspers were formed by the precipitation of iron oxide and silica in colloidal form; banding was probably related to variations in the supply of silica in the colloidal sediments.
