Abstract
The head office of GUNZE Raw Silk Mfg. Co., Ltd. was built in 1933. It was designed by the engineers of the company’s construction section. The features of the construction and the design were as follows:The building had the appearance of RC due to the use of wooden lattice pillars. They were used for the entrance and large spans in the hall. The engineers, who had experience using RC, applied the concept of iron lattice frames to this wooden building. In addition, the most of the walls, doors, trim and furniture of the interior were made of lauan plywood.These results suggest that the new development happened to wooden structure and material by the influence of the economic depression.
