Abstract

This paper discusses some of the strengths and weaknesses of port labour reform ten years after the abolition of the National Dock Labour Scheme, using taped interviews with both employers and trade unions within the industry and the writings of interested parties. It represents their views and opinions on some aspects of the industry before and after abolition. The paper discusses briefly the history of the National Dock Labour Scheme and its downfall. It then analyses the results of the de‐regulation in terms of economic and operational success, employment, training and social costs.
