Field work in the southern Gilbert Islands during the year 1964–1965 was supported by a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship and a National Science Foundation grant to Professor Homer G. Barnett of the University of Oregon. Additional grants from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the National Institute of Mental Health permitted me to revisit the Gilberts during the summer of 1966 to collect and process statistical data on court cases and land tenure partially incorporated in this paper.
