Abstract

Abstract My concern ln thlS artlcle is to suggest how The Story of an African FArm might be related to two historical conjunctures: the moment of its production (1876–1883), and the earlier momement (1858–1867) to which the text alludes. From this it might be concluded that I shall be committing myself to large generalities about ‘colonial history’, or that at any rate this history will have the status of a solid datum to which the text must then be made to answer. On the contrary: I shall not try to force its own historicity down the text's throat, as if it were an innocently empirical entitly that could only be historicised by a kind of hermeneutic violence. I shall instead proceed from the text towards the history, and then only tentatively. If I have more to say about the former than the latter this is not the result of my (admitted) amateurism where the relevant historical knowledge is concerned; it is because I hold this procedure to be the correct one.
