Abstract

So far we have looked at polynomial equations in the form of a 0 x n + a 1 x n-1 + ... + a n-1 x + a n = 0, where the a 0 through a n are the coefficients to the powers of x. We call such equations standard polynomials. However, there are more ways of setting up equations to solve problems than the polynomial form. In particular, we want to consider three other kinds of equations: exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric equations. Such equations are basic for solving modern problems from refining oil to putting shuttles into orbit.
