Abstract

Abstract The evolution of the south of Spain in the late republican period is a highly controversial topic. Nevertheless, if we are to understand the development of Baetica in the imperial period it is necessary to look closely at the area of Hispania Ulterior (Further Spain) out of which the province was formed in order to assess whether the region’s evolution, marked most notably by the grant of the ius Latii (Latin rights) to the peninsula by Vespasian, differed in scale or form in the imperial period from that which had taken place previously, or was simply a continuation of a process whose foundations had been firmly laid down in the earlier period.
