Abstract

Summary This study discusses the new perspectives on the stable carbon isotope distribution in natural gas hydrocarbons, with special focus on the evidence of a tendency to equilibrium isotope fractionation in gases from low-permeability hydrocarbon reservoirs. It also describes how the isotope equilibration expresses (or not) in the molecular composition of the produced fluids.
