Abstract

The effect of uracil starvation and of methionine starvation on the synthesis of ribosomal RNA and protein in Fscherichia coli was investigated. The study depended on the separation of 15N-containing from 14N-containing ribosomes in a CsCl density gradient, and on the separation of ribosomes from messenger RNA in a sucrose density gradient. It was found that under these conditions of starvation neither synthesis of new ribosomes nor turnover of ribosomal RNA and protein occurs. On the other hand, the turnover of messenger RNA continues during uracil starvation.
