Abstract
We argue that a comparison of the momentum sum rule for the structure function F 2 in unpolarized electroproduction and the spin sum rule for the structure function g 1 in polarized electroproduction and their respective Q 2 evolution shows that the EMC measurement of the first moment of g 1 for the proton is consistent with the low energy valence quark picture where the valence quarks carry all of the spin of the proton.
