Abstract

A spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of salicylic acid in commercial vineger. This method is based on solvent extraction of salicylate anion with tris (1, 10-phenanthroline)-iron (II) chelate cation using nitrobenzene as a solvent. A linear relationship was observed between the absorbance (516nm) of the extract and concentration of salicylic acid up to 5.5 ppm when the aqueous phase was buffered at pH 6.5. This method was applied to analysis of salicylic acid in commercial vineger and the results were in good agreement with those by official ultraviolet method.
