Abstract

TlCuCl 3 is an example of a quantum spin liquid of S = 1/2 Cu 2+ dimers. Strong inter-dimer superexchange interactions give rise to a three-dimensional dispersion of the triplet magnon. The minimum excitation energy determines the spin gap which is significantly smaller than the dimer coupling. It can be closed by an applied hydrostatic pressure of the order of 1 kbar or by a magnetic field of 5.6 T, offering a unique opportunity to study the evolution of the magnon modes through the pressure- and field-induced quantum phase transitions.
