Abstract
The social significance of gender-linked linguisitic freatures in French. During the '70s and '80s, it was argued that the tentative speech styles adopted by Anglophone women did them a disservice in the workplace. This paper suggests that French women also adopt tentative speech styles and questions the "deficit" label attached to such forms. Tentative or hedged speech, in either sex, is to be encouraged, creating and atmosphere of open-mindedness, flexibility, and respect for others.
