Abstract

Aim: To explore the social participation for four older adults with a visual impairment to better understand how access and choice affect social participation. Methods: A qualitative study to explore the social participation of four older adults with a visual impairment that engage in social participation. Results: The following themes emerged: social participation facilitated by family support, social participation providing motivation for engagement in occupations, social participation providing meaning in life, and loss of participation resulting from visual impairment. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of family support, and how occupations provide meaning, motivation, and opportunity for social participation.
