Abstract

We studied the transient electromagnetic (TEM) response of water-bearing structures in tunnels excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM) using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The influence of TBM appears at a comparatively late time due to its high conductivity value and sometimes the response of TBM and water-bearing structures can be easily separated from decay curve. We found that the influence of TBM to TEM response could be eliminated if the response of TBM could be measured or modelled accurately.
