Abstract
Jubilee (a legal prescription) has its origin in, and owes its development to, the prophetic tradition of Israel, which itself emerged from the conflict between the demands of the Covenant and the temptations inherent in being a nation 'like all the other nations'. The more developed notion, it is argued, provided the agenda for the life and mission of Jesus of Nazareth - and the Church down to our day.
