Abstract

X-ray bursts are interpreted as thermonuclear runaways in the atmosphere of an accreting neutron star. The energy release of the burst is driven by the rapid proton capture (rp) process. The characteristics of the rp-process is discussed in this paper. Particular emphasis will be given to the questions of ignition and endpoint of the rp-process.
