Abstract

Founded in 1866 for ‘the general advancement of aeronautical art, science and engineering’, the Royal Aeronautical Society is the oldest aeronautical society in the world. Its original purpose was to promote heavier than air flight - an achievement realised some 37 years after the its formation. Since then, the Society has been a focus of aerospace activity and has evolved as a global focal point for the aerospace community with 18000 members in over 100 countries.
