Abstract

Abstract Scant attention has been paid to the critical tasks associated with making case transfers in marriage and family therapy training programs successful. We propose that the key to effective case transfer lies in the departing therapist's ability to assume the role of “translator” in a four-phase process of information-sharing which includes: 1) preparing clients for termination and transfer; 2) orienting clients and incoming therapist with one another; 3) bringing clients and incoming therapist together; and 4) facilitating the continuation of the therapeutic process. The responsibilities of the supervisor and pitfalls that potentially interfere in the case transfer process are discussed.
