Abstract: This study aims to analyze the role of transformational leadership in enhancing teacher and student motivation in educational institutions. The study employs a literature review approach by examining 20 relevant scholarly journal articles published between 2016 and 2024. Transformational leadership is understood as a leadership style oriented toward positive change by emphasizing vision, inspiration, emotional support, and intellectual stimulation for its followers. In the context of education, transformational leaders, such as school principals or institutional heads, have the ability to create an inspiring educational vision, build strong interpersonal relationships with teachers and students, and encourage innovation in both teaching and school management. The analysis results indicate that transformational leadership has a significant impact on improving teacher motivation. Teachers become more enthusiastic in teaching, more open to change, and more committed to developing their professional skills. Furthermore, students also show increased learning motivation, active engagement in class, and greater self-confidence. Leadership that fosters a positive and supportive school climate strengthens interpersonal relationships within the educational environment, enhances collaboration among teachers, and builds a collaborative culture that supports the creation of innovative learning. Transformational leadership also plays an important role in the development of adaptive curricula, the creation of a conducive work environment, and the enhancement of teacher job satisfaction. Overall, the findings show that this leadership style can be an effective strategy in creating educational institutions that are not only productive but also adaptive to ongoing global challenges. Therefore, educational leaders are encouraged to adopt the principles of transformational leadership in order to strengthen the intrinsic motivation of both teachers and students in achieving optimal educational goals. Keywords: Transformational Leadership, Teacher Motivation, Student Motivation.

This article examines the effects of the leadership style of the principal, “transformational leadership and transactional leadership”, along with teachers' job satisfaction on school's organizational health. Specifically speaking, it investigates to what extent the variations in school health can be related to principal's leadership style and teachers' job satisfaction. To this end, a Likert-type questionnaire was administered to 635 teachers out of 875-person sample, working in Turkish schools. To explain the direct and indirect relationships between the dependent and independent variables, Path Analysis was used. As a result of the analysis, the most striking finding is that transformational leadership has a profound impact on teachers' job satisfaction, while the transformational leadership of the principal directly affects the school health and through teachers' job satisfaction it indirectly affects the school health. Summary National Education Basic Law, 1973 and numbered 1739, stated that one aim of high school education is to prepare students for higher education. The fact that sixty thousand of the one million five hundred students who took the University Entrance Exam (OSS) in the 1999-2000 educational year got zero point, caused authorities of the National Education and researchers to focus on these schools. Only the students of general high schools among the other types of high schools were unsuccessful formed a field of interest for the researchers and they found this subject worth investigating. The Problem Making all high schools have a healthy organizational structure has become the aim of many researchers. In Turkey, no research on the influence of job satisfaction of teachers on the organizational health of the schools and the leadership styles that school leaders show in their schools has been done. Researchers sometimes investigated job satisfaction and leadership styles individually (Balci, 1985; Pehlivan, 2000; Ozdayi, 1991; Kabadayi, 1982; Celik, 1998; Karip, 1998). However, they have never done a research relating both of them. The researches done on the job satisfaction of teachers in Turkey have revealed an important fact. It was found that the payments of teachers are insufficient (Kocak, 2002), in the research on the relationship between the leadership styles of leaders and the job satisfaction of teachers (Kabadayi, 1982; Alic, 1985), and in the research on the relationship between job stress and job satisfaction (Ozdayi, 1990) it was concluded that the job satisfaction level of teachers was low. The result of this research made it necessary to deal with this subject and search it again. Without doubt another topic that is too obvious to be discussed is the effect of the leadership styles that the leaders show in the schools on the job satisfaction of teachers. A lot of researches done on this subject revealed that the proper leadership styles that the leaders show in their schools is an important factor on the job satisfaction of the employees (Howell and Avolio, 1993; Bogler, 2001). Under the light of the explanations above in this study how much the varieties of the organizational health of the school can be related to the leadership styles of the director and the job satisfaction of the teachers. Answers to the following questions will be searched in this study. 1. What kind of relationship is there between the transformational leadership behaviour and the organizational health of the schools? 2. What kind of relationship is there between the transactional leadership behaviour and the organizational health of the schools? 3. What kind of relationship is there between the transformational and transactional leadership styles and the job satisfaction of the teachers? 4. Have the transformational leadership style and the job satisfaction of the teachers and effect on the organizational health of the school? Method 630 teachers are working in 46 high schools in the metropolitan area of the province of Ankara and they took part in this study.284 (%45) of the teachers were female and 346 (%55) of them were males. 13 of the school principals of the 46 high schools in our study were female and 33 of them were male. 39 of these school managers were assigned after completing a six-month manager training course and 7 of them were assigned without completing such a course. The participants were asked to answer likert-type questions in three different questionnaires, MLQ (Bass and Avolio, 1985), OHI (Hoy, 1991) and Job Satisfaction of Educational Administrators developed by Balci (1985). Pearson correlation coefficients among the variables were calculated. Path analysis was used to be test the hypothesized causal relationships. Findings As can be seen in Table 3 the organizational health of the school is significantly related to transformational leadership (r=.58, pl.0001), the job satisfaction of teachers (r=.55, pl0001), and transactional leadership (r= - .00, pl.001). Another relationship among the sub measures is between the perception of teachers about job satisfaction and the perception of school leaders as being transformational leaders (r=.53). The relationship among the variables showed that the organizational health of the school increased when the teachers perceived their leaders as transformational leaders at a higher level, the level of job satisfaction they got from their job and the school leaders showed less transactional leadership. To test the model in Figure 1, Path analysis was used. The aim of this analysis was to be able to make the logical explanations of the causal relationships among the variables. The most striking finding of the Path analysis was that the transformational leadership style that the principals showed in the school affected the job satisfaction of the teachers strongly (p.56, pl.05). The transformational leadership of the school principal affected the school health both directly (b=.46, pl.05) and indirectly through the job satisfaction of teachers (b=.47, pl.05). Moreover, the job satisfaction of the teachers affects the organizational health of the school directly (b=.34,pl.05) pl005). The model explains the %64 of the total variance. Discussions and Suggestions The most interesting finding of this study is that transformational leadership has a strong effect on teachers' job satisfaction. Transformational leaders' actively involved in employees' individual value systems increases the inter-organizational relations into the top level. Moreover, such leaders have a strong effect on the staff by creating a common goal in the school, easing the communication and managing the education to establish and develop the aims of the school (Cruz, 1995; Eblen, 1987; Jung, Chow and Wo, 2003). This situation might increase the quality of mutual relations and the inner motivation of the employees. This finding is similar to the findings of the researches that tested the positive relationship between the principal's transformational leadership style and the job satisfaction of the teachers (Houseknecht, 1990; Mraschilok, 1993; Everett, 1991). Organizational health is a useful structure that describes the mutual personal relations of the teachers, students and managers in the school. In other words, in healthy organizations teachers like school, students and each other .They consider the principal as their supporter to develop education. They trust their principal because they believe that their principal is a sensitive person towards their social and emotional needs. These findings must be accepted by the Ministry of Education, policy maker's supervisors and local managers of education Leadership styles that have such a strong effect on job satisfaction of teachers and the organizational health of the school must have the position it deserves.

  • Ardin Sianipar + 1 more

This study aimed to systematically review the literature on how transformational leadership could improve school performance and to identify the factors that played a role in the effectiveness of such leadership in the educational environment. Using a systematic literature review (SLR) of empirical articles from leading journals in the past five years, the study filtered and encoded key findings to understand the influence of transformational leadership. The findings showed that transformational leadership significantly improved school performance through teacher motivation, developing a collaborative culture, and increased staff commitment. Trust, collegial support, and the school climate often mediated these effects. The main limitation of this study was that the scope of the data was limited by periods and geographical regions, which may have affected the generalization of the findings. Further research was recommended to explore the long-term impact and to integrate cross-cultural perspectives. These results guided school leaders and policymakers in developing effective leadership strategies to improve performance. This study made an original contribution by summarizing various empirical studies on transformational leadership and its impact on school performance. It offered a comprehensive perspective that could support innovative leadership practices in Education. Transformational leadership among school principals is believed to influence the level of job satisfaction among their subordinates. This report discusses transformational leadership among secondary school principals, and explores the relationship between transformational leadership and satisfaction among teachers. This paper also explains the practices of transformational leadership among secondary school principals. An analysis of teachers’ job satisfaction is based upon the Two Herzberg Factors (Herzberg et al., 1959): A motivational factor and a hygiene factor. This report outlines a qualitative study which employed document analysis as its methodology. The findings indicate that transformational leadership has a significant impact on the level of job satisfaction among teachers. This study also considers the implications of these findings for the Ministry of Education, and how they might affect school management systems, school leaders and teachers, and the motivation and professionalism of secondary school teachers.

Transformational and Transactional Leadership: Association With Attitudes Toward Evidence-Based Practice
  • Aug 1, 2006

  • Gregory A Aarons

Leadership in organizations is important in shaping workers' perceptions, responses to organizational change, and acceptance of innovations, such as evidence-based practices. Transformational leadership inspires and motivates followers, whereas transactional leadership is based more on reinforcement and exchanges. Studies have shown that in youth and family service organizations, mental health providers' attitudes toward adopting an evidence-based practice are associated with organizational context and individual provider differences. The purpose of this study was to expand these findings by examining the association between leadership and mental health providers' attitudes toward adopting evidence-based practice. Participants were 303 public-sector mental health service clinicians and case managers from 49 programs who were providing mental health services to children, adolescents, and their families. Data were gathered on providers' characteristics, attitudes toward evidence-based practices, and perceptions of their supervisors' leadership behaviors. Zero-order correlations and multilevel regression analyses were conducted that controlled for effects of service providers' characteristics. Both transformational and transactional leadership were positively associated with providers' having more positive attitudes toward adoption of evidence-based practice, and transformational leadership was negatively associated with providers' perception of difference between the providers' current practice and evidence-based practice. Mental health service organizations may benefit from improving transformational and transactional supervisory leadership skills in preparation for implementing evidence-based practices.

The study focuses on the role of Transformational Leadership (TL) practices and Distributive Leadership (DL) practices on Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). The objectives of the study are to understand the global trends, challenges associated with the leadership practices and opportunities for TL and DL practices in HEIs. A Systematic Literature Review has been conducted after inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis of 16 sources has helped in understanding the importance of Vision-centric leadership practices for academic institutions so that the leaders are aware of the changes that can be adopted for higher educational standards. However, changing dynamics and ambiguity can create issues in leadership practices. TL and DL practices offer various opportunities in the form of innovation, sustainability, collaborative working and organisational commitment through knowledge sharing in HEIs. This study suggests that university leaders and policymakers should adopt an integrated leadership approach that combines visionary transformation with collaborative governance to enhance institutional performance and adaptability.

Leadership and Teacher Motivation: A Comparative Analyses on Different Types and Levels of Leadership in Schools

  • Mehmet Köse + 2 more

This research aims to analyze how school principal leadership styles and teacher classroom leadership affect teachers’ professional motivation within a holistic framework by addressing leadership at both the school- and classroom-level. With this end in mind, we have employed a SEM to analyze the correlations between principals’ leadership styles, teacher classroom leadership, and teacher motivation. The study’s sample group consisted of 325 teachers employed in primary education institutions. The Leadership Style Scale, Teacher Classroom Leadership Scale, and Teacher Professional Motivation Scale were used to collect data. We found that although teachers’ classroom leadership levels were higher than principals’ leadership levels, principals’ leadership had a higher direct impact on teacher motivation than did teacher classroom leadership and that quality interaction both in school and in the classroom is the single most influential component on teacher classroom leadership and motivation. Our findings suggest that the primary determinant of teacher classroom leadership and motivation lies in the quality of interactions within both the school and classroom environments. These results underscore the significance of principals’ leadership roles in current scholarly discussions on shared leadership in educational settings and on the conceptualization of teacher leadership. Consequently, sharing leadership does not diminish its impact but rather amplifies it. Nevertheless, while promoting shared leadership and empowering teachers are indeed virtuous endeavors in and of themselves, principal leadership is one of the most influential factors affecting teacher motivation.

Spirituality and Transformational Leadership in Education
  • Jun 27, 2012
  • Omar Riaz

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between school principals’ self-reported spirituality and their transformational leadership behaviors. The relationship between spirituality and transactional leadership behaviors was also explored. The study used Bass and Avolio’s (1984) Full Range Leadership Model as the theoretical framework conceptualizing transformational leadership. Data were collected using online surveys. Overall, six principals and sixty-nine teachers participated in the study. Principal surveys contained three parts: the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ Form-5X Short), the modified Spirituality Well-Being Scale (SWBS) and demographic information. Teacher surveys included two parts: the MLQ-5X and demographic information. The MLQ-5X was used to identify the degree of principals’ transformational and transactional leadership behaviors. The modified SWBS (Existential Well Being) was used to determine principals’ degree of spirituality. The correlation coefficients for the transformational leadership styles of inspirational motivation and idealized behavioral influence were significantly related to principals’ spirituality. In addition, a multiple regression analysis including the five measures of transformational leadership as predictors suggested that spirituality is positively related to an individual’s transformational leadership behaviors. A multiple regression analysis utilizing a linear combination of all transformational leadership and transactional measures was predictive of spirituality. Finally, it appears that the inspirational motivation measure of transformational leadership accounts for a significant amount of unique variance independent of the other seven transformational and transactional leadership measures in predicting spirituality. Based on the findings from this study, the researcher proposed a modification of Bass and Avolio’s (1985) Full Range Leadership Model. An additional dimension, spirituality, was added to the continuum of leadership styles. The findings from this study imply that principals’ self-reported levels of spirituality was related to their being perceived as displaying transformational leadership behaviors. Principals who identified themselves as “spiritual”, were more likely to be characterized by the transformational leadership style of inspirational motivation.

This paper examines the influence of the leadership styles (transformational, transactional, laissez-faire) used by school principals on the happiness, motivation and job satisfaction of teachers in Arab schools in Israel. The article presents the findings of a quantitative analysis, where the impact of the leadership styles was examined. The data was obtained using a questionnaire that was distributed to teachers. The findings show that transformational and transactional leadership style have a low influence on the happiness of teachers, and a strong influence on the motivation of teachers in Arab schools. Their use by school principals enhances the development of collaborative relations between teachers at school, and thus increases their job satisfaction, too. The authors recommend to school principals to learn and practice a mix of leadership styles, such as transformational, transactional, collaborative and empowering is formulated.

Motivation and leadership in higher education

The crucial connection between motivation and leadership in academia is examined. It investigates how educational leaders could influence the motivation of students and teachers, affecting academic achievement. Through an exhaustive analysis of the literature, leadership strategies that foster both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation within the educational community are highlighted. In higher education, motivation plays a fundamental role in the learning process. Deci and Ryan's (1993) self-determination theory posits that people have basic psychological needs that, when satisfied, drive intrinsic motivation. In this context, educational leaders can cultivate this motivation by setting up a supportive environment where students feel competent, autonomous, and connected. Transformational leadership, proposed by Bass and Riggio (2006), is especially relevant in higher education. Transformational leaders inspire their followers by articulating a shared vision and challenging challenges. By encouraging creativity and critical thinking, these leaders can strengthen the intrinsic motivation of teachers and students. On the other hand, Hersey and Blanchard's (1988) situational leadership model suggests that leaders should adapt their leadership style according to the level of maturity of the followers. In the academic context, this means recognizing when to supply direct guidance or allow more autonomy for students and teachers. This approach can influence motivation by supplying a balance between challenges and skills.

The paper adopted a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes. The study was conducted in large organizations. The study finds that role of transformational leadership on digital innovation and performance in large organizations is vital. Transformational leaders have the ability to inspire and motivate their followers to achieve common goals, and this is particularly important in the context of digital innovation and performance. The study concluded that digital innovation has become a critical aspect for large organizations to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving business landscape. As organizations continue to embrace digitalization, there is a growing need for transformational leadership to drive digital innovation initiatives successfully.  The study recommends that leaders should develop a clear vision and strategy for digital innovation that is aligned with the organization's overall objectives. This should be clearly communicated to all stakeholders and employees. The leaders should foster a culture of innovation that encourages experimentation, risk-taking, and creativity. This can be achieved by promoting an environment that rewards new ideas and initiatives. Keywords: Transformational Leadership, Digital Innovation, Performance, Large Organizations

Principals' leadership and teachers' motivation
  • May 10, 2011
  • Journal of Educational Administration
  • Ori Eyal + 1 more

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between educational leadership and teacher's motivation. The research described here was anchored in the convergence of two fundamental theories of leadership and motivation: the full range model of leadership and self‐determination theory. The central hypotheses were that transformational leadership would predict autonomous motivation among teachers, whereas transactional leadership would predict controlled motivation. The authors further predicted that autonomous motivation would mediate the relations between transformational leadership and teachers' burnout and that controlled motivation would mediate the relations between transactional leadership and burnout.Design/methodology/approachQuestionnaires assessing the variables of interest were completed by 122 Israeli teachers.FindingsResults, based on structure equation modeling, supported the hypotheses, suggesting that leadership styles among school principals play a significant role in teachers' motivation and well‐being.Research limitations/implicationsThe school's environment in Western society is characterized by many impositions and pressures that affect teachers' well‐being, as reflected in their quality and intensity of motivation, affect, and burnout. Thus, the present research findings suggest that if the power in educational systems is delegated to school principals, and if the latter are encouraged and trained to be autonomy supportive toward their educational staff, then these steps may potentially facilitate teachers' autonomous motivation, satisfaction, and well‐being.Originality/valueFew studies have examined the relationship between various styles of leadership and different types of motivation among followers. The present novel study has the potential to fill this gap by empirically studying the relationship between educational leadership and teachers' motivation.

The Influence Of Transformational Leadership On Teacher Motivation And Engagement: Proposed TELM Framework
  • Jan 1, 2024
  • Educational Administration: Theory and Practice
  • Rosalyn V Sumampong + 1 more

This study investigates the impact of transformational leadership on teacher motivation and engagement in elementary schools, proposing the Theory of Transformative Educational Leadership (TEL) as a conceptual framework. Drawing on empirical evidence and established theories, the study explores how transformational leaders inspire and empower educators toward excellence. Results indicate positive perceptions among teachers regarding their interactions with school heads, emphasizing clear communication, support, and recognition. Moreover, transformational leadership behaviors such as idealized influence and individualized consideration significantly predict teacher motivation and engagement. These findings underscore the importance of fostering supportive relationships and empowering environments in educational settings to enhance teacher morale and ultimately improve student outcomes. The proposed TEL framework integrates transformative leadership dimensions, including Visionary Leadership, Collaborative Culture, Empowering Practices, and Continuous Growth and Learning, with Dynamic Management and Inspirational Management principles. This comprehensive framework offers a holistic approach to effective leadership in educational settings, emphasizing flexibility, responsiveness, enthusiasm, and commitment to fostering excellence and positive change.
