Abstract
Eugenio Fred Aguilar, MD, Houston, Tex, addressed the Fifth International Symposium on Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, in Toronto, Canada, on the subject of the role of the facial plastic surgeon in microtia repair. Aguilar stressed the common misconceptions that surround the management of patients with congenital microtia. The most common of these misconceptions are due to lack of knowledge about the disease process and the therapy that is available to the patients. These misconceptions include the fact that the child is totally deaf and will have no reasonable prognosis for hearing. Other fallacies presented are that nothing is available, that the child needs an immediate hearing aid, or that the child needs immediate surgery. The team approach between the otologist and the reconstructive surgeon was emphasized, along with the recommendations made for appropriate diagnosis and workup.
