Abstract

Equilibrium island biogeography is used to assess the importance of stepping stone islands in the colonization of more distant islands. The effect of a single stepping-stone island is relatively small, as it chiefly serves to increase the colonization rate of species that should be successful colonists in any case. A chain of stepping stones boosts colonization more than a single, centrally located stepping stone of the same total area.
