Abstract

The ethnic culture of the Bombay Jews in Israel remains distinct in many ways from that of other communities and from the larger patterns that have come to characterize even this highly plural nation. The distinctiveness of the ethnic community has become concentrated in several areas of cultural activity, for example the synagogue, clothing, the role of community leaders, and the repertoire of traditional religious music. In the immigrant setting music has become highly symbolic at both functional and structural levels. The ways in which music is used by the ethnic group reflect essential musical structures, especially the development and expansion of small motifs into enlarged structures.
