The Role of Motivation and Spiritual Meaning in Predicting Bullying Behavior among Islamic Boarding School Students
This study examines how personal motives, spiritual meaning, and social support influence bullying tendencies among pesantren students, finding that social support strongly predicts motivation and spiritual engagement, while interest experience negatively correlates with bullying behavior, highlighting the importance of community and spiritual factors in reducing harm.
Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, offer a distinctive educational experience where learning is intertwined with religious growth and community life. This research aims to evaluate the impact of school well-being and social support on the tendency for bullying in Islamic boarding schools. Specifically, the study investigates how personal motives and the perceived religious importance inherent in the pedagogical practices of these campuses can predict bullying behavior within the unique social environment and disciplinary system of pesantren institutions. We conducted interviews with 300 students across various pesantren. The cross-sectional survey utilized structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings indicate that personal qualities significantly predict an individual's spiritual meaning (β = 0.21, T = 3.18, p < 0.01) but do not directly relate to motivation or interest experience. In the context of pesantren, spiritual meaning is positively associated with these factors (β = 0.19, T = 2.87, p < 0.01). Spiritual factors significantly enhance motivation (β = 0.34, T = 5.62, p < 0.001) and spiritual meaning (β = 0.41, T = 6.48, p < 0.001). Social support emerges as the most reliable predictor of motivation (β = 0.38, T = 6.11, p < 0.001), interest experience (β = 0.29, T = 4.57, p < 0.001), and spiritual meaning (β = 0.26, T = 4.02, p < 0.001). Notably, interest experience negatively predicts bullying behavior (β = −0.31, T = 4.89, p < 0.001). These results underscore the crucial role of community and spiritual support in enhancing students' well-being and reducing harmful activities in pesantren.

The Traditional Islamic Boarding Schools stated that there is no sign of a smoking ban in the Traditional Islamic Boarding Schools environment. The understanding of the MUI fatwa and qanuns regarding smoking prohibition is also lacking, and the students also do not study the Al-Qur’an and Hadith about smoking prohibition. The results of the interview also stated that the Traditional Islamic Boarding Schools agreed to intervene with the use of social marketing to Change Smoking Behaviors of Students in Traditional Islamic Boarding Schools in Aceh. CONCLUSION: The application of social marketing has not been effective in changing the smoking behavior of students in Aceh. The application of social marketing needs to be supported by internal and external Islamic Boarding Schools.

This study aims to examine the Role of Islamic Boarding Schools in Increasing Community Political Participation in the 2024 Election. In Jember Regency, the Election is an effort to convince and involve individuals in the political process. This is because there are symptoms of decreasing enthusiasm for community members' involvement in the election. The decrease in community enthusiasm is caused by the lack of political influence on the lives of the wider community. Many policies issued by the government are considered misdirected and inappropriate, only certain groups are directly influenced by these policies. Therefore, in the election process, the community is convinced through campaigns to involve the community in the political process and increase enthusiasm in the implementation of the election. The dynamics of political mobilization based on religious identity cannot be separated from the role of religious institutions and religious figures. In this case, the institution in question is the Islamic boarding school or better known as the Islamic boarding school, which is a traditional Islamic religious education and broadcasting institution in Indonesia. Life in Islamic boarding schools has a different cultural and traditional system from the lives of society in general, in Islamic boarding schools the students are educated with binding regulations. Traditional Islamic boarding school (Salafiyah) students tend to be unfamiliar with all forms of problems that are happening outside, because in this case, Salafiyah students are only involved in religious activities in the pesantren environment. Salafiyah students only get religious knowledge without being accompanied by general knowledge. This condition ultimately makes those from Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools emerge as religious leaders, or they will plunge into informal sectors. Along with the development of the times, Islamic boarding schools also have another side of life that is no less important, namely politics, therefore, as we have seen so far that in every important political momentum in the history of the nation, Islamic boarding schools are always involved (Ismail, 1999). The role of Islamic boarding schools today is also very clear. The most obvious example is the difficulty of the government to popularize programs if not through Islamic boarding school leaders. Another example is the number of political leaders approaching Islamic boarding schools, especially before the general election. The behavior of these leaders is right, if they do not approach Islamic boarding school leaders, it means that their political vision is low. The influence of the kiai is not only on the students in his pesantren, but also the community around the pesantren and can even go further. The absolute authority and power possessed by the kiai is often used by political forces (political parties) to gain support from the students and the surrounding community.

This study aimed to examine the influence of social support on psychological well-being among adolescent students in Islamic boarding school. The sample consisted of 343 students, representing the full adolescent age range of 13 to 21 years, drawn from three Islamic boarding school located within Banjarbaru City and Banjar Regency. Participants were selected using quota sampling. The research instruments were adapted from prior validated scales and pilot-tested on a group matching the target population’s characteristics. The pilot testing yielded a reliability coefficient (Cronbach’s alpha) of .923 for the social support scale, with item discrimination indices ranging from .324 to .744, and a reliability coefficient of .961 for the psychological well-being scale, with item discrimination indices between .551 and .747. Results of a simple linear regression analysis indicated that social support significantly predicted psychological well-being, with a correlation coefficient of r = .305 and a significant unstandardized regression coefficient of b = 0.712 (p < .001). The coefficient of determination (R² = .093) revealed that social support accounted for 9.3% of the variance in psychological well-being. These findings suggest that higher levels of perceived social support among adolescent students within the Islamic boarding school environment are associated with greater psychological well-being during their personal development. This study underscores the importance of fostering positive, supportive interactions within school and dormitory settings, as such social support systems significantly enhance students’ psychological well-being throughout their educational journey in Islamic boarding school.

Living life in an Islamic boarding school is not an easy thing for teenagers. The difficulties experienced by teenagers at Islamic boarding schools are certainly very different from the difficulties experienced by teenagers outside Islamic boarding schools. During the observations, the author found several cases where there were santri (Islamic Boarding School Students) who had run away from the Islamic boarding school with the aim of being expelled, but the students still continued to live in the Islamic boarding school. Another fact, is that there are students who violate the regulations in Islamic boarding schools with the same goal, namely to get them expelled from the Islamic boarding school, but in fact the students still remain in the Islamic boarding school. The aim of this research is to examine in more depth the role of peer support in growing the Adversity Quotient in Santri. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on students' mental health. However, little is known about its psychological effects on students in Indonesian Islamic boarding schools. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of stress among students in Islamic boarding schools and identify the associated contributing factors in the early post-pandemic period. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from March to April 2023 involving 425 students from four Islamic boarding schools in East Java, Indonesia. Participants were selected using a convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that included sociodemographic information and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) to measure stress levels. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the association between stress and various factors. Results: The findings showed that 30.64% of students experienced stress. Factors significantly associated with stress included female gender (OR: 2.17; 95% CI: 1.130–4.190; p < 0.020), length of stay of less than one year (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.204–0.925; p < 0.031), dissatisfaction with allowance (OR, 2.81; 95% CI, 1.238–6.424; p < 0.014), poor communication with friends (OR: 3.60; 95% CI: 1.947–6.659; p < 0.000), and lack of social activities with peers (OR, 4.80; 95% CI, 1.415–16.28; p < 0.012). Conclusion: This study highlights the need for targeted mental health interventions in Islamic boarding schools, particularly those that address financial satisfaction and social relationships. Strengthening peer communication and providing emotional support may help to reduce stress among students in post-pandemic settings.

Inclusive Education is education that is open to all groups of people. Inclusive-based education in Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren) is to serve all students of different backgrounds. Students in Islamic boarding schools are composed of different backgrounds and personal identities, as students with inclusive values. Adaptation with the school environment requires self-efficacy in religiosity and spirituality. Self-efficacy can provide encouragement to students enrolled in Islamic boarding schools. Self-efficacy is a feeling of success through possessed abilities to achieve individual life goals. Self-efficacy gives a positive psychological impact towards a person in their lives. Research results indicated that there is a need for guidance and counseling services that can increase the self-efficacy of students yet allow them to stand firm in their religiosity and spirituality. To respond to this matter, there is the need for an application that students may use in any situation and condition. Therefore, the Islamic Guidance and Counseling Application (IGCA) answers the needs of education in Islamic boarding schools. The utilized method in this research was the qualitative method with observations, interviews, and documentation to examine the religiosity and spirituality of students in Islamic boarding schools.
