Abstract

White et al. report their research on Salmonella strains isolated from ground meats purchased at grocery stores in the Washington, DC area. The authors isolated Salmonella from 20% of the 200 sampled products including 35% of chicken, 24% of turkey, 16% of pork and 6% of all beef samples. Resistance to at least one antibiotic was found in 84% of the isolates and 53% of the isolates were resistant to at least three antibiotics (some isolates were resistant to nine different antibiotics). Ceftriaxone-resistant Salmonella and multidrug resistant S. enterica serotype typhimurium DT 104 were also isolated.
