Abstract

The announcement of the closure (1997) of the Belgian Renault plant in Vilvoorde generated a series of judicial proceedings in Belgium as well as in France. These proceedings highlighted the impact, enforcement and complicated interplay of the Collective Redundancy Directive (98/50) and the European Works Council Directive (94/45) in a case of cross-border restructuring. This contribution seeks to analyze these proceedings in a comprehensive way, commenting on the legal issues at stake.
