Abstract

In March 2000 the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) produced a set of guidelines for the removal of wisdom teeth. They recommended that the practice of removal of pathology free wisdom teeth should be discontinued. One of the criteria for wisdom teeth removal included orthognathic surgery. The practice of wisdom teeth removal is common practice as part of pre-surgical orthodontic preparation usually occurs up to 2 years before the actual surgery date. This is carried out as day case surgery under a short general anaesthesia or multiple visits under local anaesthesia.
