Abstract

In Escherichia coli cells infected by bacteriophage T4, lysozyme synthesis may occur in the absence of DNA synthesis. The rate of lysozyme synthesis that is observed to occur in the absence of DNA synthesis is a function of the multiplicity of infection. In experiments where the level or the time of initiation of DNA synthesis was affected, the rate of lysozyme synthesis again showed a dependence on the number of phage DNA present in the infected cells.
