Abstract

This mini-review article focuses on metallodendrimers containing redox-robust systems that are attached to branches at the dendrimer periphery, and specifically on the properties, functions and applications of these nano-materials. The mini-review is illustrated essentially with the dendrimers containing metal-sandwich termini such as ferrocenes, cobaltocenes and mixed-sandwich complexes of the [FeCp(η6-arene)] family that have been developed in the author’s laboratory. Synthetic aspects have been developed and reviewed elsewhere, and here emphasis is placed on stoichiometric and catalytic electron-transfer processes involving redox recognition, redox sensing, redox catalysis and molecular materials aspects. Finally uses of redox metallocenes and metallocene-containing macromolecules as components of batteries are briefly discussed.
