Abstract

We present new data on IRAS04553–6825, a red supergiant (RSG) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Initially classified as a normal Red Giant in the LMC (Westerlund et al. 1981), IRAS data showed that with a bolometric luminosity Mbol = -9.3 mag it is the most luminous RSG in the LMC (Elias et al. 1986). Its spectral type M7 is very late for this massive a star (MZAMS ~ 50 M⊙: Zijlstra et al. 1996). Its known distance and little interstellar extinction make it an ideal object to confront stellar evolution models with accurately observed stellar parameters.
